Ooty the short name for Ootacamund is a famous hill resort in the state of Tamil Nadu in Southern India. Ooty also known as Udhagamandalam the capital of Nilgiri district is usually called as the "Queen of hill stations' among the tourist places in india. It is situated at the intersection of Tamilnadu, Kerala and Karnataka. It is at 7500 feet above the sea level and finds its position in the Nilgris hills. The name Udhagamandalam is derivative from the TODA word "othakal-mund" which means "house in mountains". Ooty was first declared in about 1821 in the Madras Gazette which was then spelt as "Wotokymund" by an unidentified correspondent who was one among the Europeans to set an eye on ooty which is a widespread valley enclosed on all sides but the west by a lofty range of hills. Ooty nestles in an arena created by four majestic hills-Doddabetta, Snowdon, Elk Hill and Club Hill. These hills are part of the Nilgiri ranges that are really the gathering point for the Western and the Eastern Ghats.
It is founded by the British in the early part of the 19th century. Ooty was residence to many Britishers who have fallen in love with this hill station where they discovered a modest bit of England. History:
Udhagamandalam, the "Queen of hill station" is the capital of Nilgiri district. Nilgiris is called as "Blue Mountains". The word Nila, we know to have been used over 800 years ago since, the King of the Hoysalas Vishnu Vardhana, who ruled from 1104 to 1141 A.D. detained the Nilgiris Plateau. His general Ponisia recorded this fact in 1117 A.D. The name Nilgiri was outstanding to the blue mist which envelopes the range with most distant hills of considerable size. History of Ooty is major and respect admirable. It clutches the visitors attention. Vishnu Vardhana, the Hoysala King, from 1104 to 1141 AD, lines the earliest history of Ooty.
Ooty came under the control of the British East India Company and after several years. John Sullivan, the district collector of Coimbatore started the formation of the hill station Ooty and promoted it as a perfect summer hill station. In the year 1812, the assistant revenue assessor, Mr. Keys and Mc Mahon, be the district collectors of Coimbatore. In the year 1818, J.C Whish and N.W. Kinderseley visited this place and in 1819 the route to Ooty was laid as a main tourist destination. In the year 1821, the first route to Nilgiri from Coimbatore was laid.
An important fact about the history of Ooty is the laying of the path to the hill station. The first Coonoor Ghat road was built in the year 1832. In the year 1871, the present metaled Ghat road was constructed to connect Kallar and Coonoor by wrapping a total area of about 25 kilometers. The first house in Ooty was built by John Sullivan. Within a few months, the hill station started rising further as a tea estate for its residents. The high tea, evening tea is an essential part even now to this day. Ooty became one of the most important hill resorts in India, lots of cottages, clubs and other buildings were structured to house and provide entertaining facilities to the British officials.
